The headline change: breeding can now mutate
The 1.0 update added Mutation as a breeding mechanic: a small chance that an egg produces a Pal stronger than the normal result of that pair. It is the first time in Palworld's life that breeding has an outcome the parents' ranks cannot predict.
In practice a mutated egg hatches into a much rarer Pal than the pair would normally produce, and always arrives with four passives, at least two of them tier-4, one of which is a skill that cannot be obtained any other way. It also comes out Alpha, at Condensation level 2, with very high stat Potentials. The odds are 1% per egg, raised to 3% by feeding the farm an Extravagant Vegetable Cake.
Four new cakes changed the cost of breeding
Before 1.0 there was one cake and one recipe. 1.0 added four more, each aimed at a different part of the egg roll, one of which, the Vegetable Cake, produces two eggs at once and therefore halves the ingredients you spend per egg:
| Cake | What it targets |
|---|---|
| Mushroom Cake | Stat growth (talents) of the newborn Pal |
| Vegetable Cake | Egg count: two eggs per cake |
| Extravagant Vegetable Cake | Mutation chance (1% → 3%) and stat growth |
| Special Cake | Chance of inheriting multiple passives from the parents |
The standard Cake is unchanged. Every recipe and workbench is in the cakes guide.
Work Suitability was overhauled
1.0 reworked work suitability across the game, and levels now reach higher than they used to, and Anubis, for example, carries Handiwork 6 and Mining 6 in the current data. Any pre-1.0 ranking of "best Pals for a job" is therefore stale by definition, because it was built on the old level caps.
This site avoids that class of error structurally: the job guides and the work tables recompute their rankings from the current dataset on every page load, so a data refresh updates the rankings instead of leaving a dated list behind.
New passive skills, including an entire new category
1.0 added many new passive skills, including base-focused ones such as Ranch Master (Ranch work suitability +2) and utility passives that affect the player rather than the Pal, and it introduced a new category called World Tree Passive Skills. Those are deliberately double-edged: Twin-Edged Holy Blade gives Attack +50% in exchange for lower defense.
This matters directly for breeding, because the passive pool is what inheritance draws from. A pair carrying skills that did not exist before 1.0 can pass them on, so a pre-1.0 "perfect four passives" list is not necessarily the current best set.
Awakening, and how it sits next to breeding
1.0 also added Awakening, a separate way to strengthen a Pal you already own. It is not a breeding mechanic and it does not change what hatches, but it does change the investment calculus: a freshly hatched perfect Pal is the beginning of a build rather than the end of one.
This calculator stays deliberately narrower than the game. It answers which Pal hatches from a given pair and which pairs reach a target, while Awakening, Condensation and level investment all happen after that question is settled.

How many Pals are there now? Four numbers, all correct
"How many Pals are in 1.0" has more than one right answer, because subspecies share a Paldeck number. Here is each figure with what it actually counts:
| Number | What it counts |
|---|---|
| 72 | New Pals added in the 1.0 update, per the official notes |
| 287 | The total the 1.0 notes quote for the game |
| 299 | Entries in the dataset Pal Breeding Calculator runs on, which counts subspecies separately |
| 214 | Distinct Paldeck numbers once subspecies are grouped with their base Pal |
| 276 | Pals reachable by breeding: they have at least one parent pair |
| 104 | Pals excluded from the rank formula's candidate pool, so no pair can hatch them |
The 23 remaining Pals of the 299 are variants with no parent combination at all: they are not reachable by breeding under any circumstances.
What did not change
It is just as important to know what survived the update, because this is why a well-built breeding calculator still works after 1.0:
- The rank formula itself, floor((rank A + rank B + 1) / 2) with the lowest-index tie-break, is unchanged.
- Special combinations still take precedence over the formula, and 1.0's new Pals slot into that system rather than replacing it.
- One cake still produces one egg (or two with a Vegetable Cake), and a farm still holds a maximum of 20 eggs.
- Same-species pairs still breed true.
- The passive inheritance odds are unchanged: the same two rolls and the same 40/30/20/10 percentages described in the inheritance guide.
How Pal Breeding Calculator stands behind the 1.0 changes
Every number on Pal Breeding Calculator comes from a single 1.0 dataset, and the engine that turns it into answers is tested against the game's full breeding table on every data refresh, all 44,851 pairs replayed with zero mismatches. If a future patch changes a rank or a combination, re-importing the dataset updates the whole site, the pair counts, the job rankings and these guides' figures in one pass.
What Pal Breeding Calculator does not claim, and never will: the outcome of a specific mutation (the odds are 1% or 3%, the result is a rarer Pal, but which one is not predictable), per-pair stat Potential rolls, and World Tree drop tables, for which no source publishes a verified per-Pal list.
What an older guide gets wrong now
- "There is no mutation mechanic in Palworld." Wrong since 1.0: Mutation exists, with published odds and five mutation-exclusive passives.
- "Pals have no individual stat rolls." Wrong since launch of the Potential system: ATK, DEF and HP Potentials are each 30% father, 30% mother, 40% rerolled.
- "There is one Cake recipe." Out of date: 1.0 added four more, and one of them produces two eggs per cake.
- "Best Pals for each job" lists that stop at the old work suitability caps. Every ranking on Pal Breeding Calculator is derived from the current 1.0 work levels.
FAQ
What is the biggest breeding change in Palworld 1.0?
Mutation. A 1% chance per egg (3% with an Extravagant Vegetable Cake) of hatching a much rarer Pal than the pair would normally produce, always with four passives including a mutation-exclusive one, always Alpha, at Condensation 2 with very high Potentials.
Did the breeding formula itself change in 1.0?
No. The rank average, the +1, the floor and the lowest-index tie-break are all unchanged, and special combinations still take precedence over the formula.
Do pre-1.0 breeding guides still work?
Only for the species formula. Anything about cakes, mutations, stat rolls or "best Pals by job" was written against an older game and is now inaccurate in ways that cost ingredients.
How many new cakes did 1.0 add?
Four: Mushroom Cake, Vegetable Cake, Extravagant Vegetable Cake and Special Cake. The standard Cake recipe was not changed.
Are 1.0's new Pals breedable?
Most of them. 276 of the 299 Pals in the Pal Breeding Calculator dataset have at least one parent pair, 104 Pals are excluded from the rank formula's candidate pool and can only come from a fixed special combination or from the wild.
Does the calculator handle the new Mutation results?
It predicts the normal outcome of a pair, which is what a breeding calculator can do deterministically. A mutated egg is a 1% roll with a rarer result, so Pal Breeding Calculator documents the odds rather than inventing a prediction it cannot make.
